Creating sustainable and successful businesses in the current climate of credit crunch and consumer fear is not all about reducing costs, increasing productivity and working longer hours. When businesses are under pressure, one of the first things affected are the people who work there. Bosses become tetchy, employees become difficult, cultures slip into fear and retribution and the costs associated with managing the situation escalate.
Sickness and absenteeism increases, productivity drops and staff turnover goes through the roof. The most damaging aspect of all of this - not only to the employee and your reputation as an employer - is the damage it does to your current and potential customer relationships and to your order book.
You know the solution won’t come through obtaining the latest MBA, nor by attending another leadership or motivational course, or by constantly upgrading technical gadgets - these are all symptoms of the corporate killer disease "RIP" (Reactive-Insecure-Panic).
When times are tough it’s time to factor in the human element. Successful identification and management of the effects of the survival instinct in terms of individual and team drive, determination and fallibility is the major determinate of continued business success.

Is your attitude in recession?
The truth of the matter is that there is no recession. Even if the worst economic hurricane hits, the only reason your company or career prospects might sink is if you let them.


Reminds me of one company I worked at where the MD left it to his Directors to give out bad news and rarely spoke at team meetings. You can guess how much respect he had. Good people didn’t stick around.
